200 million channels.
That’s how many creators are on the internet.
I remember when they used to say, “70 channels and nothing on!"
I miss a time before mine when they couldn’t say anything at all
I seek the pearls amidst a vast ocean of irrelevancy.
I miss the days of 73 channels. I miss the days of black and white static and bunny ear antennas.
I miss the quiet of that time.
I think we missed a train that went another way.
I miss when people only spoke
when they had something worth the say
I miss the quiet silence and appreciation people had
for what we all call uncomfortable and awkward now
Like everyone’s afraid to hear a heart beat
or a mouth exhale.
Anything human and intimate
is too much for 200 million channels to bear
witness
I miss seeing in your eyes
the grand display of all the heavens all at once
in those cloudless starry nights
what are all these strange lights?
Blue and red and green and bright that paint the sky obscuring
obscuring obscuring obscuring our sight
I can still remember though, barely ever see
Reflections of the moon off of a far and remote lake.
Reflections of a people who knew what was at stake.
Who knew something called fate.
Who threw the runes and casted coins
Who told the future before the future became a static moment frozen in space
The old prophecies have either been fulfilled or failed to come
I miss the world that was before the one that makes us all feel numb
the world stopped turning
It must have stopped
to see what all the ruckus was.
“200 million channels
and nothing on.”

It’s a shame Substack doesn’t let me upgrade on my phone, what’s up with that?
