I might be running from the devil
But what if that devil is billions of people screaming about how I should be homeless, jobless and friendless because I didn’t consume poison with them?
What if running from the devil is running from microplastics, microprocessors and “microaggressions.”
What if I run, because I cannot bear to admit that I live in that world.
What if I am running from delusional takes, and fake smiles and unreasonable expectations and a boring, awful conversation I’ve had 37 times about something that’s not real but that everyone around me pretends is.
What if running from the devil is running from
the chemicals in my food
or the lies on my TV
or the propaganda on my phone
or the expectations to obey
or the increasing costs of everything
and the lack of pay to pay for them
or the pictures of blown up buildings
and severed limbs of children
or my inevitable obsoleteness
as I am replaced by rocks
that they ground-up and smelted and molded
and branded with magical symbols that control them
and electrocuted them into indentured servitude
like they used to do to me, figuratively.
What if the devil is the malicious attempt to make me lose my faith in humanity, by telling me that people have always been awful, and violent, and untrustworthy, and dishonest and criminal, self-serving and apathetic.
What if the devil is showing me graphs and charts and lines and equations and numbers and statistics and studies and headlines that don’t make sense streaming across a screen as an actor on that same television pretends to be an unhinged animal so I lose hope in everything and stop fighting so hard for the real people they don’t represent or speak for, but because they’re the only people we ever see, no one knows what a real person feels like they just know which ones they’re supposed to hate today and why.
What if the devil is trying to convince you that everything is terrible, and has always been terrible.
That all these things are not just symptoms of an evil world
being run by the devil.
