Fortean Realm Plasticity: A Theory of Everything...Strange.
What if it really is a dream, and the evidence has been right in front of our faces the entire time.
Imagine you’re in a dream, or recall a time when you were. Remember how sure you were of its reality. Its spatial dimensions and apparent flow of time.
The crispness of the winter air in a cinematic reconstruction of a real memory from your youth.
The wetness of water.
The feelings of embarrassment and fear from your “naked at school” or “missed the big test” recurring dream.
It all felt so real, while you were in it. In fact, you never questioned the giraffe driving a car or the talking dog giving you advice on your taxes.
Very seldom were the details so fantastic as to shake you into lucidity, causing you to realize it was all a ruse of your mind. Though when it did happen, this striking revelation caused the whole vision to fade as the entire dream slipped away from you like sand through your fingers. Within moments you were transported from one world you were so sure was real, back into the into another world more static and familiar. And upon waking, you came to the sober realization that none of it was in fact, real.
“It was all a dream.”
But it wasn’t just the specific circumstances, people and problems that dressed up the stage of the dream, it was the very nature of the dream itself that was also an illusion. The very notion of space and time with its four dimensions. Something that falls to the background of our experience in both sleeping and waking hours.
The fundamental structure of reality we are so accustomed to living in and basing our perceptions on was also an illusion in the dream. Constructed completely by your brain and its wild imagination. There was only ever one dimension in that dream, and that was the dimension of mind. The entire thing, no matter how REAL it felt, was simply made of thoughts.
We largely take for granted the incredible circumstance of dream. How amazing is it that about four pounds of convoluted soft tissue can generate photorealistic, fully-immersive and interactive worlds with seemingly infinite choice selection leading to seemingly infinite storylines with absolutely no loading times?
And that’s all coming from a comparative speck of dust on the Earth, which is a comparative speck of dust in the milky way galaxy, which is…Well you get the idea.
So, what could the universe generate if it was inside of a mind the size of itself? Well, I imagine it could generate the entire universe.
That is what this little thought experiment is all about.
I present to you, Fortean Realm Plasticity.
